The Caltagirone variation is part of the “Licodia Eubea – A19 PA-CT” fast road infrastructural plan phased in 5 lots, from the the Libertinia-Licodia Eubea extension (ending south of Caltagirone) to the Gigliotto junction with the S.S. 117 Bis. “Variante di Caltagirone” is one of the phased lots, consisting in the design of variance interventions during construction. “Variance design #1 and #2 have been already accomplished: the first led to the brand new design of the Paradiso I and Ippolito I-II-III viaducts in compliance with the new Italian Technical Standard NTC08; the second led to the brand new design of the Molona junction, i.e. the Molona viaduct, the Salvatorello tunnel and the road axis. At the same time, the design activities covered the hydraulics of the basins intersecting the road and the water disposal system for of the road platform. The overall design also focused on the safeguard of ancient archaeological and environmental finds by principal and secondary road axes rethinking and, alternatively, protection works.
